Beat Street

Beat Street - 1984
This film along with Style Wars and Wild Style, introduced Hip Hop (all the elements) to the rest of the world.
The film focuses on Kenny, a young hip-hop artist living in the Bronx with his younger brother Lee and their mother. Kenny's dream is to become a successful DJ whiles his brother Lee is a breaker in a local crew.

Parts of the film is based loosely on Style Wars. Most visibly, the graf writer Spit was lifted from the real-life graffiti artist CAP who featured in Style Wars.

The highlight of the film for me must be the battle in The Roxy between The NYC Breakers and The Rocksteady Crew, as well as some memorable quotes which stick in my head. "A white one", "Eat yo' eggs before I break yo' legs", "Let's go Kuriaki" and "Yo, ya'll biters. All your homeboys are biters. Ya'll whack, so what's up with that!"

The film features alot of pioneers of early Hip Hop including Afrika Bambaataa, Grandmaster Melle Mel, original members of RSC, Doug E Fresh, Jazzy Jay and more.
I'd recommend you watch it if you haven't.

They're only noodles Michael

I have been known to post about movies I've just seen or movies that are just straight up classics, but today I'm writing about The Lost Boys purely cos I've just stumbled across the fact that they have made a sequel to the original called The Lost Boys 2: The Tribe. I must admit I was totally unaware of this news.

First of all why would they go ahead and do this 22 years after the original was released. Apparently the only two actors reprising their roles are the two Corey's. (Nothing to do with the fact their careers haven't exactly maintained Hollywood A list? Not even Z list to be honest).

I wouldn't go as far as to say the original is a modern day classic but it was an amazing film to watch growing up. One of those that you watched over and over. It kind of introduced me to The Doors (via Echo and the Bunnymen), and as much as it was a really good 80's movie, it should indeed stay in the 80's.

But even Jason Patrick (who I still feel to this day should have played Jim Morrisson in The Doors movie) turning it down must say something about the sequel. I mean I haven't seen him since Speed 2.

I'm not one for remakes and stuff but I'd rather them contemplate a full remake than releasing a part 2 all these years later which will no doubt has little to do with the original storyline and I'm guessing it will be released direct to DVD. (I'm not even sure if it's been released yet)??

Pencil to Paper

It's a hectic process this design business.
This design will either end up in the waste paper bin or on a t-shirt. We'll have to wait and see.

Hartlepool Dock Rock Festival 1986

Long before music festivals like Glastonbury and Reading got real commercial and attracted the amounts of people they currently do, Hartlepool held it's own 3 day festival called Dock Rock in 1986. Unfortunately I was only 10 and didn't make it there and looking back now it seems the event was classed a failure even though it attracted a modest 10,000 people and it did have some amazing acts on. I didn't even realise some of them actually played.

The festival even attracted The Smiths to attend whiles they were recording The Tube in Newcastle. Maybe Morrissey actually liked the town as he has played Hartlepool since and is due to play again later this month.
It was suggested at the time that this be an annual event but it never happened. What a shame.

Acts who graced the stage included Madness, Dr and The Medics, The Wailers, Gil Scott Heron (I couldn't believe this) and Champion Jack Dupree.

Graffitti artists were also drafted in to paint on the walls. Unfortunately the majority of the site is now waste land and most of the decorated wall has been knocked down or crumbled.
I did manage to take a few snaps of what remains(very little). All the original art obviously well faded and replaced by the modern day youths efforts at attempted throw ups.

I'm in the process of trying to obtain some more images from the library and want to try to get hold of one of the original posters advertising the event.
